MIRACLE OF MIGRATION,” FEATURING KEVIN KARLSON
Nothing is more fascinating in the avian world than migratory movements
of birds. From 20,000-mile annual journeys of Arctic terns to 1200-mile
non-stop fl ights of Blackpoll
Warblers, there are still many unanswered questions concerning the “how,
why, where and when” of bird migration. Kevin will begin his presentation
with a review of
different types of bird migration, giving general examples of each.
He then will highlight different bird families and selected species
that perform amazing feats of physical endurance each year during migration.
Finally, he will share interesting facts that offer insight into the
mystique of bird migration. Kevin Karlson is a wildlife photographer
specializing in birds. Living near Cape May, he has over 80,000 images
representing most of the major bird families in North America. He recently
co-authored a comprehensive volume
called “The Shorebird Guide.” This innovative work proposes
a simpler
and more effective approach to fi eld identifi cation of birds. (Don’t
miss his workshop Saturday afternoon.)
