Country Way Mercantile: A Modern Nod to the Old Country Store

Nestled in the heart of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Country Way Mercantile is more than just a charming shop — it’s a love story, a dream fulfilled, and a testament to the enduring spirit of small-town tradition. Since opening its doors in 2001, this family-owned business has become a local treasure and a beloved example of the classic country store reimagined for today.

The story behind Country Way Mercantile begins with Barry and Margaret Marsh — better known to friends as Moggie. Both natives of the Eastern Shore, Barry grew up in Exmore while Moggie was raised in nearby Nassawadox. Their lives have always been rooted in community and family. After graduating from Northampton High School, the two married and began building a life together, raising two children while dedicating themselves to careers in service — Barry in the United States Navy and Moggie with Virginia’s Department of Social Services.

When retirement came, so did an opportunity to bring a lifelong dream to life. Barry and Moggie transformed their shared vision into Country Way Mercantile, a place where nostalgia, practicality, and neighborly charm meet. Walking through the doors feels like stepping back in time — shelves lined with goods that stir memories of simpler days, friendly faces behind the counter, and an atmosphere steeped in warmth and authenticity.

True to the spirit of an old country store, Country Way Mercantile is more than a business — it’s a gathering place. It reflects the values that have always defined the Eastern Shore: hard work, hospitality, and heart.

Whether you’re a local stopping in for everyday essentials or a traveler discovering the hidden gems of the Shore, Country Way Mercantile offers a reminder that some of the best things in life are rooted in tradition — and grown with love.
